Abita Brewery Beer Dinner Monday Night May 18, 2009 - 6:30 p.m. |
|
|
In its first year, the brewery produced 1,500 barrels of beer. By 1994, Abita outgrew their original site (now converted to a 100 seat brew pub!) and moved up the road to a larger facility to keep up with demand. Today Abita brews over 80,000 barrels of beer and 5,000 barrels of root beer in a state of the art brewing facility. Their lagers and ales are brewed in small batches, hand-crafted by a team of dedicated workers with only the highest ideals of quality. Abita is privately owned and operated by local shareholders, and they use only the finest ingredients – British and North American malted barley, German and American yeast strains, Pacific Northwest hops and the pure artesian water of Abita Springs, their namesake hometown. An extraordinary 5-course meal... each course matched with an extraordinary beer!

Saturday, April 25th , we celebrated our second anniversary with a fun, old time STREET CARNIVAL! We had it all: air jumps (3 sizes!), magician, dunking booth, pie throws, cake walk, ring toss, face painting, bag toss, giant bubbles, the Fondren Express Trolley, and THREE pizza eating contests (kids, tweens and adults) and an ice cream eating contest! A complete photo album can be found by clicking on the picture on the right side of this page or by clicking here.
Here are the winners:
KID PIZZA EATING CONTEST 8 & UNDER
Tiphanie Ellis won by eating three 14" cheese pizza "kid slices" in 8 minutes and 25 seconds! Tiphanie's name will go on our winner's plaque, and she won a year's worth of kid slices - twelve $20 gift cards to Sal & Mookie's so she can take her family!
KID PIZZA EATING CONTEST 9 - 15
Alex Good, 12 year old daughter of Sal & Mookie's co-owner Jeff Good showed it runs in the family. She finished off FOUR 14 inch cheese pizza "kid slices" in 4 minutes 41 seconds.. Since she's "in the family" the prize of $360 in free pizza (12 $30 gift cards) went to second place winner Gabe Starr who finished in 5 minutes 43 seconds.
ADULT PIZZA EATING CONTEST 16 & OVER
This wasn't even CLOSE. Jamie Evans crushed the competition by eating an entire 18” cheese pizza in 5 minutes and 25 seconds. The closest competitor had just finished 1/2 of his pizza! It was unbelieveable!!! Jamie won $1,200 in Sal & Mookie's Pizza... twelve $100 cards! CONGRATULATIONS JAMIE!!
Morris Mermelstein put the competition to shame as he downed 2 1/2 pints of ice cream in 5 minutes. Each contestant had one pint each of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry, and were allowed to choose the order in which to eat them. Morris won $600 in dessert from Sal & Mookie's - twelve $50 gift cards!
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OUR WINNERS... BUT MOST OF ALL THANKS TO ALL OF OUR CUSTOMERS WHO CAME WITH THEIR FAMILIES AND MADE OUR FIRST STREET CARNIVAL A HUGE SUCCESS!
We raised $1,061 for the Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital, and we had a wonderful time doing it... together as one community!
So, for those of you who want to give the eating contests a shot... better start training! Next year will be here before you know it!!!
